About the Company

4D pharma Cork Ltd is a campus company in Cork whose aim is to investigate how variations in the composition of bacterial communities in the gut can be used for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Recent advances in the field have highlighted the importance of the gut microbiome, not only for the development of safe and efficacious new therapeutics, but also for the discovery of novel personalised diagnostic tools.

4D pharma Cork Ltd is a subsidiary of 4D pharma plc (, a UK pharmaceutical company developing Live Biotherapeutics, a novel and emerging class of drugs. 4D pharma Cork is developing a diagnostic platform, MicroDx, across multiple disease areas, mirroring 4D’s proprietary MicroRx platform for the discovery of live biotherapeutics.

Purpose of the Job

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced bioinformatician/biostatician/computational biologist to join the 4D pharma Cork bioinformatics team to work on exciting EU Horizon 2020 funded project. The project is focused on microbiome applications for sustainable food systems and consists of a consortium of 34 partners from Europe, Canada and New Zealand. This is a four year position which may be extended by the company after the project. The successful candidate will analyse and integrate microbiome, clinical, dietary and metabolomics datasets to identify interactions between the microbiome, health and disease to inform innovative sustainable food products to promote health. The individual must be capable of working independently as well as part of a team to achieve the deliverables of the project.

The successful candidate must be available to start immediately.

Experience / Qualifications Required

  • At a minimum, a PhD in one of the following areas: bioinformatics/biostatistics/computational biology/machine learning
  • Significant experience in the analysis of high-throughput datasets and integrative analysis of diverse omics datasets from different platforms.
  • Track record of independent critical thinking and scientific achievement evidenced by excellent publication record.
  • Experience with two or more computational/statistical languages such as but not limited to R/bioconductor, Java, Perl, python, stata and Bash shell-scripting experience (Unix).
  • The candidate should be knowledgeable, highly motivated, creative, and collaborative.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and an attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • A committment to maintain and develop personal and management skills by undertaking mandatory and other training as required.
  • Garda vetting and international police clearance check may form part of the selection process.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Carry out biostatistical and integrative analysis of different datasets e.g. microbiome, metabolomic, dietary and clinical metadata to meet the project objectives.
  • Prepare progress reports and presentations on company research activities and present data at project meetings as required.
  • Liaise with project team, to ensure timely processing of data to advance the research programme.
  • Maintain and manage all data in a safe and secure manner at all times.
  • Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities to develop research skills and competencies as required by the Directors and Site Manager.
  • Participate in training as required to develop or augment core skill-sets.
  • Promote and maintain a positive teamwork environment.

Purpose of the Job

The Process Development department, based in Aberdeen (Scotland), is recruiting a BioProcess Engineer. Under the supervision of the Process Development Director, the candidate will work on bioprocess development projects in a laboratory / pilot environment. The candidate will work on different types of bacteria including strict anaerobes. The candidate will be in charge of the optimization of the key steps of the process : Fermentation, Centrifugation, Lyophilization.

The successful candidate will lead technical applications in the fermentation process of anaerobic bacteria using a bench-top fermenter with the development team. The primary focus of the group is to optimise bioprocesses of the strains which will go into industrial production. The candidate will also evaluate purity, potency and stability of the bacteria. The candidate will be responsible for the preparation and execution of various experiments and should therefore have a strong background in the culturing, enumeration and aseptic handling of microorganisms.

Previous experience in a microbiology laboratory is essential to this position as is the ability to work independently and with attention to detail. Candidates who have previously worked with anaerobic bacteria are particularly desirable.

Experience / Qualifications Required

  • This position has a minimum requirement of an Engineer/Master’s degree in biotechnology or microbiology.
  • Industry-relevant experience with microbial product development for minimum of 6 months.
  • Experience supervising junior team members would be desired
  • Experience with bench bioreactors.
  • Experience with bacterial culturing, enumeration techniques and purity evaluation.
  • Experience with aseptic techniques.
  • Experience with anaerobic bacteria would be advantageous.
  • Familiarity with quality assurance documentation.

Key Areas of Responsibility under the supervision of the Process Development Director

  • Development and Optimisation of fermentation process on anaerobic bacteria at bench-top fermenter
  • scale.
  • Development and Optimisation of lyophilization process on anaerobic bacteria at pilot scale.
    Technical support to evaluate purity, potency and stability of anaerobic bacteria
    Management of development analyst
    Formatting the results in English according the internal procedures (QbD approach)
    General Laboratory maintenance

  • Comfortable presenting data via PowerPoint over skype and face-to-face
  • Independent and proactive.
  • Flexible with working hours.
